About Carlstadt NJ

Carlstadt is a borough in Bergen County NJ and has a population of approximately 6,127 people. It was originally formed as a village in 1860 by and act of the New Jersey Legislature.  Carlstadt became a borough in 1894 during the phenomenon known as “boroughitis” when 26 boroughs were formed in Bergen County.  The origin of the name Carlstadt is disputed, as some people think it was after Dr. Carl Klein the leader of a group of early German settlers.  Others think the name comes from the city of Karlovac in Croatia which is known as “Carlstadt” in German.  Carlstadt is bordered by the Bergen County municipalities of East Rutherford, Wood-Ridge, Moonachie, Ridgefield, South Hackensack and Wallington.
